grocery budget template

in this blog, i share a quick version of how i create a grocery shopping budget to keep track of grocery spending using my special excel spreadsheet template. i didn’t have a strategy to keep me focused in the grocery store and on target with my overall financial goals. i received a comment on a video asking me where they could buy my spreadsheet so for the first time ever,  i’m making this grocery budget excel template available for you to download. with that said, let’s go through the exact details of how i create a grocery shopping budget to keep track of grocery spending using my special excel spreadsheet template. i grocery shop when i get paid, which is every two weeks, so my grocery budget is created to last for two weeks. i tend to buy groceries in bulk to last two weeks, but your situation may be different.

before i leave the house, i create a grocery shopping list using my grocery shopping excel spreadsheet. in order to maximize my grocery shopping budget, i look at what i already have in my pantry, fridge, and freezer. from there, i may tweak my grocery shopping excel spreadsheet to eliminate things i already have. while in the stores, i pull up my grocery shopping excel spreadsheet to filter to the exact store and sort my category (ie- grocery aisle). finally, once i’ve hit all of my favorite stores i will return home and review my grocery shopping budget excel spreadsheet. i never delete items from my list because i am likely to buy again, but if i want to create a new grocery shopping excel spreadsheet for a special event i’ll just copy/paste and start again. this means if you make a purchase through a link, you get to buy something awesome (at no extra cost to you) and i get a tiny commission that allows me to continue making fun, helpful, and informative content.

there are few ways to figure out the best food budget for your family, and i’m going to walk you through them using my free grocery budget worksheet. but i’m going to walk you through how to figure out the best budget for you and your family. there are three resources i use when coaching someone on how to calculate their food budget: a percentage of your income, the usda grocery budget figures, and the snap (food stamp) allowance. this is a large chart based on the ages of everyone in your family, and what kind of food plan you will choose. you decide which plan you want to look at (i recommend the two middle ones), and add up each person in your family to get a total weekly or monthly budget amount. this is the second number i use when trying to get a baseline for a food budget. this is a simple number – it’s the maximum you could get in snap benefits for your family size. and i get that it’s not a number that you “owe” someone so you think you can control it.

add up your income portion, and the two usda plan amounts, and divide by 3 to get that average. now that you have what your grocery budget should be, let’s figure out how to keep it separate from everything else. there is a simple system that does work for me though. first, i make a list of my foundational items – items i buy on a regular basis – and see if i can easily find coupons for them. once you’ve got a good handle on the top 10, you can add more but just don’t let it get out of control. and i keep them in a simple fabric coupon organizer i bought on etsy. what are you spending money on that could easily be made at home? you basically keep a record of prices at the stores you shop at so you know where to buy what. you’ve got a grocery budget, a way to keep track of that budget, a short list of coupons, and are meal planning and watching your food costs.
